Avoid the Tow Truck: Quick Fixes for Common Car Troubles

When your car goes wrong on the road, your first instinct might be to call a tow truck. However, several common car problems can be fixed, saving time and money. This blog post covers some handy tips and quick fixes for frequent car issues that can help you get back on the road without needing a tow.

 1. Dead Battery

A dead battery is one of the most common car problems, especially during cold weather. If your car won’t start and you suspect the battery is dead, you can try jumpstarting it. Keep a set of jumper cables in your trunk and make sure you know how to use them:

Park the working car close to yours without the cars touching.

Join the positive terminal of your battery with the red clip and the positive terminal of the other car with the other red clip.

Connect one of the black clips to the other car’s battery’s negative terminal.

Attach the second black clip to a metal surface on your automobile that isn’t painted and is far from the battery.

Start the working car and let it run for a few minutes.

Try starting your car; if it starts, let it run to recharge the battery.

 2. Flat Tire

Having a flat tire is another issue that can often be resolved without professional help. You can change the tire yourself if you have a spare tire, jack, and lug wrench. Here’s how:

Ensure your car is parked on a flat, stable surface and you have engaged the parking brake.

Use the lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts (but don’t remove them yet).

Place the jack under the vehicle at the designated point and raise the car until the tire is off the ground.

Remove the lug nuts and the flat tire.

Mount the spare tire and screw the lug nuts back on by hand.

Lower the car, then tighten the lug nuts as much as possible.

 3. Overheating Engine

If your car’s engine starts overheating, pull over immediately. Turn off the engine, open the hood, and let the engine cool. Please do not attempt to open the radiator cap while the engine is hot, as it can lead to severe burns. Once the engine has cooled:

Check the coolant level in the reservoir. If it’s low, top it up with a 50/50 mix of water and coolant (keep this mixture in your trunk).

Check for any leaks or broken hoses. If everything looks okay, start your car and carefully monitor the temperature gauge.

If the problem persists, it might be best to call for help as the issue could be more serious.

 4. Stuck Ignition Key

If your key gets stuck in the ignition, spray a little WD40 or similar lubricant into the ignition slot. Wiggle the key gently, but do not force it, as this can cause the key to break. If the key turns but doesn’t start the car, make sure that the car is in park or neutral, as many vehicles have a safety feature that prevents starting if not in the correct gear.

 5. Dirty Windshield

A dirty or smeared windshield can impair visibility, especially at night or in rainy conditions. Always keep a clean cloth and a bottle of windshield washer fluid in your trunk. If your windshield wipers aren’t doing a good enough job:

Spray the windshield washer fluid and use new wiper blades if you have them.

If the problem is the wiper blades and you don’t have replacements, clean the existing blades with a cloth and some washer fluid to remove dirt and grime.

 6. Headlights or Taillights Out

A headlight or taillight out can reduce visibility and result in a ticket. Most car models make it reasonably easy to replace these bulbs:

Consult your vehicle’s manual to find the correct bulb type.

Turn off the car and remove the keys from the ignition.

Open the hood or trunk access area to reach the light assembly.

Remove the old bulb by turning it counterclockwise and disconnecting the power connector.

Please insert the new bulb, connect the power, and secure it by turning it clockwise.

Being prepared for common car issues can significantly reduce your reliance on tow services. Keep essential tools and a few spare parts in your trunk. Familiarize yourself with your vehicle’s manual and consider practicing some of these fixes when you have free time. This knowledge can be a lifesaver and boost your confidence as a car owner. Safe driving!
